Experience
Dr. Porter worked for several years as a bilingual (Spanish) psychologist at
Manhattan Psychiatric Center, and later at Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center.
He has been in private clinical practice as well since 1987.
Therapeutic Orientation
Although Dr. Porter’s clinical training was in psychoanalytic
(Freudian) therapy, he has developed an eclectic approach over the years
that tailors treatment to the needs and desires of the patient. Some individuals
seek change/personal improvement that comes with increased self-understanding
and awareness, others prefer a more symptom-focused approach via cognitive-behavioral
techniques. Dr. Porter works with adolescents, adults and couples.
Education
Dr. Porter earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University after having
studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and getting a Masters degree from the
University of Grenoble, France. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts
University.
Specialties
Dr. Porter has conducted countless evaluations and treatment of personal
injury patients (No-Fault and Workman’s Compensation). He is certified
by the Workman’s Compensation Board to conduct treatment and Independent
Medical Examinations of patients injured at work. He has performed utilization
(peer) reviews on thousands of cases.
Dr. Porter is an expert in clinical and educational assessment. He has performed numerous psychoeducational evaluations for the Board of Education of New York City, both in English and Spanish. He also evaluates children for admission to gifted and talented programs.
Expert Witness
Dr. Porter has been certified as an expert in Manhattan, Kings, Queens,
Bronx, Richmond, and Nassau counties. He has testified in hundreds of
cases, both for plaintiff and defense. Issues include disability, medical
malpractice, medical necessity, and child custody. He has also testified
on behalf of the state in criminal cases.
